“You have to reach for the stars. For me, it’s kind of literal because I want to have a company in aerospace. People need to invest in technologies that will make the world better. Many entrepreneurs have their eyes set on being an impact business. I would like to see more dreamers like that.”

In 2001, there was an outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) amongst livestock in Uruguay. By the time the outbreak was controlled, Uruguay had suffered millions of dollars in economic losses and thousands of animals had died. Given that cattle products make up Uruguay’s largest export, this was particularly devastating for the country. At the time, Victoria Alonsopérez was in her early teens and living in Uruguay.

Valentina (Vale) Quagliotti, founder of an audio visual production company called Ikusi, has spent the last several years on a remarkable journey as a social entrepreneur. Ikusi makes audio visual content for nonprofits, NGOs and other global organizations working to address social issues. By merging journalism, film-making, and a focus on social impact, Ikusi creates “micro-documentaries” that increase visibility for the nonprofit as well as the people it is aiming to help.

Lucia Cardozo and the first sustainable school in Latin America

About one and a half hours east of Montevideo, just outside of a well-known vacation town called Punta del Este in Uruguay, there is a beach-side town called Jaureguiberry. During the summer, this area of Uruguay is crowded with both Uruguayan and foreign vacationers. Otherwise, Jaureguiberry is a quiet place. It is also home to a very unique construction site: right alongside the main highway, there is a high-spirited team putting the final touches on Latin America’s first sustainable school.
